Mount Taranaki rising up in the distance. Legend says that in the days of old, when the North Island’s volcanoes were gods, Mount Taranaki lived at the center of the Island harmoniously alongside four other mighty peaks: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu, and the enchanting Mount Pihanga. But his advances on Mt Pihanga were reproached and he fought with Tongariro. A fierce battle erupted between them—the earth quaked, and the sky darkened as the mountains vented their anger. He lost and the beautiful Pihanga stood close by Tongariro’s side. Taranaki, consumed by grief and jealousy, tore his roots from the earth and departed to the west coast where he now sits.
Some say Taranaki broods silently, waiting for a chance to return inland and challenge Tongariro once more!
